(Magazine of Poultry Indonesia) - Good layer breeding management does not only belong to large-scale breeders. Even small-scale breeders are now starting to implement them, as shown in Sierad’s Layer Performance Contest (SiLaPeC) 2010.
Starting from a desire to improve the Human Resource (HR) of layers breeders and provide services to end user, PT Sierad Produce Tbk held Sierad's Layer Performance Contest 2010 or SiLaPeC 2010. This first event was held at Puri Perdana Hotel Blitar on 25 June 2010 with breeders from Blitar and Tulungagung as participants.
According to Sugeng Nugroho, General Manager Marketing PT Sierad Produce Tbk, SiLaPeC is one of concern and appreciation of the company to layer breeder especially small breeders with population below 10,000. This contest is expected to give motivation to small breeders to implement good breeding practice. So far, small breeders often neglect aspects that may improve their breeding performance of their livestock such as management of feedlot, recording, bio-security and the shape of chicken-house and often breeding in traditional ways. They are often reluctant to make any changes although they have understood the methods and its benefits.
Furthermore, according to Sugeng, the scope of this event is currently regional but for the future Sierad Produce plans to carry this contest to other regions such as Bali, Central Java, and Sulawesi to have national scope for future SiLaPeC.
In the meantime, Drh. Sudirman, Director of Poultry Division of Sierad Produce, in his speech mentioned that it is difficult for breeders to control the price of eggs. Layer breeders have the ability to control production cost, while production cost really depends on feed cost. Therefore, Sierad Produce is willing to assist breeders in reducing the production cost but with production quality at-par with other feed.
“This event is expected to enable the breeders improving their breeding skills, hence will improve its performance. Please do not judge this event from the prizes given, but from its purpose,” hoped Sudirman.
In the meantime, Drs. Ec. Amin Zarkasie, General Manager Sales East Operations of PT Sierad Produce Tbk, added that this event is aimed for breeders that have loyally used products of Sierad Produce, and does not depend on whether or not they have used the feed of Sierad Produce for long period of time. “The most important things are loyalty and consistency of the breeders in using Sierad Produce’s feed, which makes it easier for us to measure performance of their livestock,” added Amin.
Contest Criteria
The journey of SiLaPeC was started six months ago with the presentation of recording books to the breeders. Subsequently, they received intensive guidance from the Field Officer (PPL), and only two months later that judging process was started. “Practically, their performance was monitored for judgment purposes,” said Sugeng Nugroho.
From around 200 layer breeders with population scale of 2,000 – 10,000, 18 nominators were finally selected. These nominators were selected based on quality of breeding and high spirit to advance. Later on, a team from Sierad Produce comprising of personnel from marketing, R&D, sales, and from PT Biotek Indonesia, made overall judging process by directly visited the chicken-house of breeders. They made assessment based on several aspects such as bio-security, cleanliness, recording, performance up to the shape of chicken-house. From all these aspects, 10 finalists were selected to appear in the final of SiLaPeC.
During the final of SiLaPeC, these ten finalists were given opportunity to make presentation on their breeding success story in front of the jury from Sierad Produce comprising of Amin Zakarsie, Adi Murdiati and Bachrozi.
The presentation was so attractive, due to breeders with variety of educational background and presentation style. Some were shy, some did not what to say, even there was one who had high spirit like our founding father Bung Karno, up to the one who used Blitar style fine Javanese language.
Apart from presentations, the jury also asked one question to the finalists. One interesting question was posed by Amin Zakarsie who asked Imam Suhadi, one of finalists, to demonstrate how to teach breeding techniques to other breeders. At that time, Amin immediately went on stage and acted as junior breeder, followed by Imam Suhadi who taught Amin about the good breeding practice while inviting him to use products of Sierad Produce.
After the judging process was completed, three finalists were named as the winners, being the First Winner Musahari, Runner-Up Ishomuddin and the Third Place Dyah Jaya Kusumastuti, SH. The award presentation was alternated with door prize and dangdut music.
The three winners would receive opportunity to visit Indo Livestock Expo & Forum in Jakarta Convention Center scheduled for early July 2010. Their visit will be fully facilitated by Sierad Produce. The first would also receive a motorcycle. Keep up your spirit and always maintain best product performance!
Guaranteed Quality with Excellent Service
Musahari
This first winner of SiLaPeC 2010 mentioned that he started breeding since 2000 using feedlot from Sierad Produce. His main reason for choosing feedlot from Sierad Produce is its affordable price that can reduce production cost with quality at-par with other products.
The man that now has more than 9,000 chickens added that he is motivated to improve his breeding due to simulations and techniques taught by his field officer. Under the guidance of the field officer, he felt that he had remarkable progress than before which translated into better performance.
Ishomuddin
According to Ishomuddin, runner-up of SiLaPeC 2010, he has been using products of Sierad Produce since 2002, due to cheaper price than other products. His fellow breeders introduced him to feedlot produced by Sierad Produce. For him, feedlot quality is the most important aspect in feedlot selection since it will offer great help during there is temporary downturn in eggs’ price while the price of feedlot increases. Therefore, if the quality of feedlot is well maintained it will obviously produce well. Recording is another important aspect in the layer breeding.
Dyah Jaya Kusumastuti, SH.
This third winner of SiLaPeC 2010, Dyah Jaya Kusumastuti, SH, mentioned that since she uses product of Sierad Produce, is production gradually improves. She once achieved production peak up to 94 percent and healthier chickens.
According to her, SiLaPeC 2010 is a good event to improve the spirit of good breeding. For example, said Dyah, how the breeders are often reluctant to clean the chicken-house although it is important to prevent the disease contraction. “This event reminds us to always care about cleanliness,” said Dyah.
Dyah admitted that since using product of Sierad Produce, the death rate of livestock has become lower, rare disease contraction, and controlled vaccination. Dyah admitted that she often forgets the vaccination schedule, but luckily those field officers often remind her. “Mam, it’s time for vaccination,” said Dyah imitating the reminder from her field officers.
“Field officers are really helpful. Their speedy service and handling are superb. They often control chickens’ performance, at least once a week. If it is in the DOC stage, they can come often and monitor DOC development until they are grown larger,” said owner of Wijaya Kusuma Agro Farm.
Currently, Dyah has 10,000 layers and has been using products of Sierad Produce for the last five years.
