Silapec Awards for Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region, The Proof The Commitment of Sierad

Poultry, March 2011 - Sierad’s Layer Performance Contest (SiLaPeC) is the proof of the commitment of PT. Sierad Produce, Tbk in developing the business of its layer breeder partners, particularly those cultivating fewer than 10 thousand chicken.  “We expect they can move forward in line with the organization of SiLaPec. We do hope they can grow their business scale. We will increase the number of the Field Extension Officers so that the technical capability of our loyal customers may improve”, confirmed drh. Sudirman, Director of Poultry Division of Sierad Produce at the time of the presentation of SiLaPec awards to the three winners of the regional level contest for Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region at Hotel Hyatt Yogyakarta on February 24.

Similar enthusiasm was also implied by the opinions of the breeders attending the program. “This program must be continued in the future since breeders need to shared knowledge and experiences. It’s not about the presents but the knowledge we gain from this program”, said Pringgo Setyanto a young breeder from Cilongok, Banyumas. Similar opinion was also expressed by Suko Priyono, one of the finalists from Pugelan Purbalingga. “I expect Sierad to keep its quality. This program encourages small breeders to move forward. All big things undoubtedly come from small things”, he said.

Before this, the SiLaPec activity was organized at layer breeding centers in Blitar and Bali which was later followed by the activity in Makassar Region. The winners will then be contesting at the national level.

drh. Sigit Prihartanto, Sales Manager Territory for Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region said that SiLaPec is a people’s breeder competition event developed by PT. Sierad Produce. After a very competitive selection process, the best people’s breeder in the Yogyakarta and Central Java region was decided. Long before the organization of SiLaPec, the company sent field extension officers to “accompany” the breeders to achieve good breeding performance.

Field Extension Officers are important parts of this program. They serve as the technical assistances of the breeders during the contest. Their existence will be maintained and their number will be increased in order to achieve the improvement of technical management accompanied with good breeding spirit of the customers of Sierad forage since the main thing of this program is not the contest but rather the increase of the financial profit of all customer breeders on a continuous basis. “We will keep providing assistance till their business have been developed”, said Sigit. For the region of Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region, the number of Field Extension Officers will be increased from 5 to be 10.

The technical management discussed here is actually not a complicated thing but in fact it is a fundamental thing overlooked by breeders such as recording, sanitation, vaccination and weighing of the chicken. The function field Extension Officers is to supervise and make sure that those fundamental things are implemented appropriately so that the production standard of each strain of chicken used may be achieved.

Impact of SiLaPeC

Sigit believes that this program may burn the spirit and motivation to cultivate since the breeders are always assisted by the Field Extension Officers. As the result, the layer breeder customers of Sierad may increase the productivity of the bred animals by up to 3-5 percent. “The average Hen Day was 85% and after we provided the assistance, it can reach the top so that the financial profit also increases significantly”, he said. In line with the increasing profit, the number of customers and sale of forage in this region also increase. “In addition, the loyalty of the Sierad customers also increases”, he said.

Alex Murtopo Jati, the Field Extension Officer coordinator for Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region explains the increase of productivity is due to the fact that the breeders are now making themselves used to doing fundamental things in breeding and the increase of their knowledge. “Now they know recording and diseases other than ND and Gumboro, for example Coryza, CRD, and ILT”, he explained.  Therefore, the number of chicken dead at the age of 0-16 weeks is decreasing. In the past, the average chick in was 700-800 chicken but now the chick in is more than 900 chicken per 1000 chicken and there are breeders whose chick in rate reaches 997 chicken”, he said proudly.

The feeding cost is also becoming more efficient by Rp 10-20 thousand for one mixed feed since the breeders feed the chicken in accordance with the need, namely 115-120 gram per chick per day and not in an excessive portion as implemented in the previous period.

The Field Extension Officers also assist the breeder to improve the biosecurity system, including the storage of the forage. “In the past, the floor of the warehouse was not layered but now it is layered to keep the forage from being damaged”, he added. The Field Extension Officers also make the breeders the pilot project or model in a region to be an example for the other breeders. It is expected that there will be small group discussions among the breeders to improve their cultivating skill.

Good Quality, Affordable Price

Ten finalists of the SiLaPeC for Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region coming from Bantul, Gunungkidul, Purbalingga dan Banyumas in their presentation said that the forage of Sierad is the forage with the most affordable price compared to the other ones. However, its quality is good and stabile despite the lower price.

The presentation of the SiLaPeC Awards was also made more interesting by the distribution of attractive door prizes such as washing machines, notebooks, cellular phones and gas stove while the main present is a motorbike.
